Καλώς ήλθατε - Welcome

Welcome to Corfu. Welcome to an island which is laden with battles and conquests from being occupied by the Romans in 229BC, to being conquered by the French and then occupied by the British.
During World War II, Corfu was first conquered by the Italians and then by the Germans who burnt and destroyed homes, historical and architectural monuments and cultural treasures. Throughout this onslaught and invasion, the Corfiots, the people of Corfu, rebuilt this island through hard work, determination and a great love for their homeland, making Corfu one of the most cosmopolitan island resorts in the Mediterranean.
Corfu, named Corcyra in ancient times, was named after the mythological water nymph, daughter of the river God, Aeosopos. Myth has it that Poseidon fell in love with Corcyra (Korkyra) and took her away to the island of Corfu which he named after her. It is still known as Kerkyra to the Greeks.
According to mythology, when Ulyses travelled to Corfu he was nursed back to health by Nausica, daughter of Alkinoos, who after making him better in her fathers's palace, gave him a ship to take him back to Ithaka. It is said that this angered Poseidon so much , that he petrified the ship which became a small island in the bay of Paliokastritsa, where Alkinoos' palace is.
Is it then any wonder then why Corfu is also referred to as 'the island of love'?
With love spanning throughout the ages on our beautiful island, we welcome you to share in its beauty and its culture where you too will fall in love.
